Fellowships and Benefits

Each admitted PhD student will receive a fellowship for a maximum duration of four years, amounting to €16,242.96 gross per year (subject to tax). Additional benefits include:

  • A settlement allowance of €500 for EU residents and €1,000 for non-EU residents.
  • A monthly contribution of €150 towards living expenses for those renting in Trieste.
  • A laptop reimbursement of up to €400.
  • Up to €1,000 for third- or fourth-year students to support training and networking.
  • Health insurance reimbursement up to €700 for those not covered by EU regulations.
  • Parental and medical leave benefits under SISSA regulations.

Application Requirements and Process

SISSA encourages applications from candidates holding a Master’s degree (or equivalent) with a keen interest in research. There are no age or citizenship restrictions.

Applicants must submit the online application via PICA platform by the deadline specific to each program. Required documents include:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • University transcripts
  • Final degree certificate (or proof of impending graduation)
  • Copy of the thesis (if available)

Up to two referees may be listed to provide letters of recommendation, which must be uploaded within two days after the application deadline.

Selection Process

The PhD selection process may involve a videoconference interview or a written exam. For virtual written exams, candidates must use two cameras: one to show themselves, and another to show the screen. A valid ID is required for verification.

Admission and Enrollment

Successful candidates will be notified by email and are expected to arrive at SISSA by October 1, 2025. Failure to report without a valid reason results in forfeiture of both admission and fellowship.
